Client Spotlight: Kay Lee

Kay grew up in Granbury, tracing her local roots all the way back to 1868. The Randles, on her mother’s side, came to Hood County from Tennessee. Her great, great, grandfather was ill and told his wife they needed to move to a warmer climate. In a yearlong journey, all documented in letters he wrote that preserved the family history, he found his way to Hood County and received a land grant. He returned home, got the family and came back to Hood County where he died after only six weeks. Her family wanted her to return to Tennessee, but she stayed and became quite an entrepreneur, buying and selling land.

Kay’s grandfather was in the goat business, and sold an animal earmarked for her. He used the proceeds to open her first bank account at age 4. At age 6, she went to Cherry Drug Store alone and saw a doll she wanted. She handed over a check and told the clerk, “If you write the check out, I’ll print my name.” The clerk called Kay’s mom who confirmed that, yes, she had her own bank account and could buy the doll. She was one of the few 6-year-olds writing checks in town!

Kay always liked typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping and went to business school at Brantley-Draughon business college. She worked at a local title company and happened to do paperwork for an executive at T.U. Electric. She made such an impression on him and his wife that they offered her a job, where she worked almost 20 years.

Kay and her husband, Robert, an Air Force vet, had the classic Texas first date: a high school football game. They were married 48 years before his passing. Early in their relationship, he bought her a loom for Christmas. While her first thought was “what is this?”, she took lessons and spent years weaving table runners and other decorative items.

Kay is involved in several organizations, including a sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Colonial Dames XVII. She has been Treasurer for several of these organizations, which is natural since she’s dealt with money since the age of 4!

Kay is a big supporter of the six local volunteer fire departments and appreciates their dedicated service. She also enjoys working with our team at Berry Wealth Group. “They’re all very conscientious about what they do, and if I have a question, I don’t feel embarrassed to call and ask. I’m not bashful!”

We’re not bashful about saying how much we love having Kay Lee as a client.
